Know These 4 Things Before Booking your Senior Photos

If you are a High School Senior in Northern Colorado, CONGRATS! It’s already your last year, can you believe it!?

If you are a parent here; grab your box of tissues. Or your party hat! Your kiddo is graduating!

The best way to keep this special memory alive for years to come is through their senior photos. They're the photos that will be on next year's Christmas cards, hung up in frames around your home, and sent to all of your family members. So, it's crucial that they look exactly how you and your teen want them to look!

But it can also feel overwhelming, figuring out where to start when it comes to booking these sessions. I've put together a little High School Senior guide to help you navigate this exciting season, and take all the stress out of this precious moment in time.

When to Book a Senior Photographer:

I would highly recommend booking your photographer in the late summer, right before senior year starts. Note: Senior photos are typically due either in fall or in the spring!

I also recommend asking your photographer what the turnaround time is. This means the amount of time it takes for a photographer to edit and return the portrait photography back to you. Each photographer has a different process, so don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Find Your Style:

You might be on Pinterest, or seeing other friends’ posts and notice that different photographers have their own styles. Remember, we are not robots. We are human, just like you, with our own “eye” and our own expertise.

Pinpoint whether you like the “light and airy” style, the “cool vs warm” style, or the “moody” style. For example, the style you see on my website is more on the “light and airy” side because I believe in timeless photos. I have an ethereal vision to find beauty in simplicity.

Another factor to think about is how the photographer poses their clients. Some High School Senior photographers pose more naturally and candid, while others are more traditional.  Make sure you like their style and posing ideas, then go ahead and send an inquiry form. Most inquiry forms are on the photographers’ website.

How to Inquire:

Now that you know your style, look for at least three photographers that match the style you are looking for. Why three? One might be booked, and the next option could be out of your budget. It's always a good idea to have backup plans.

This session is an investment. It is important to invest in a photographer because photos are forever. Your senior photo will be the photo in your yearbook, the photo that will go on graduation invites, and the photo that you can look back on and remember all of the amazing moments that lead up to who you are in your senior year. 

The Outfit Guide and Client Closet:

Woohoo! You're halfway there. Once you have found your photographer, you will need to start planning your outfits. Here is what I would recommend:

Outfit #1: Informal Outfit

Outfit #2: Formal Outfit

Outfit #3: Sports Attire and Hobbies; something that makes you, YOU! This could be a jersey, a letter jacket, an accessory like an instrument, etc.

Still not totally confident? Well, lucky for you I have a client closet. A client closet consists of clothes that I have invested in over the years to provide my client’s the best client experience. Instead of spending your own money on attire you might not wear again, you can rent clothing from me!
