Why you should book an engagement session.

Engagement session in a field by colorado wedding photographer Velvet Heart Photography

You’ve said yes. You’ve started sorting through the details. Wedding dresses, photographers, venues. Maybe you’ve finalized a few things. It’s coming together! You’re doing it! Your dreamy Colorado wedding is approaching!

But there’s one thing making you a little nervous. You’re camera shy. You and your partner aren’t models and, chances are, you’ve never done a professional photography session before. Now, here you are, nearing your wedding day and wondering how you’re supposed to look natural or romantic. You’ll do it all with the trusted guidance of your photographer, but let’s be real… you’ve only talked a few times. WHAT! It’s a lot of pressure and it can make even the most outgoing couple feel a little nervous. But don’t stress. We have an answer.

When should I book my engagement session?

Schedule an engagement session four to six months before your wedding with your photographer. Not only will you give yourself and your fiancé a little taste of what it means to be in front of a camera, but you’ll get to know your photographer better and you won’t be walking into your wedding day still wondering what you’re supposed to do with your hands. It’s a practice run. (And, good news, when you book your wedding package with me, the engagement session is complimentary for most of my packages!)

You will have the opportunity to loosen up

Booking your Colorado engagement session will help you and your fiancé feel more relaxed on your big day. You won’t be worried about doing something wrong or looking weird, because by that time, you’ve done this before! Your photographer knows you’re new to this and this is the perfect opportunity to ease into this thing without being rushed. It’s hard to look natural in photos (especially romantic shots!) but that’s the beauty of your engagement session. You’ll learn these things beforehand and be more comfortable with poses, candid shots and taking direction. It is so important that you and your fiancé feel relaxed on your wedding day and your engagement session is the trial run to get there.

Get to know each other

Now, by this point you probably know your fiancé pretty well, but consider this a chance for you, your partner and your photographer to all get a little more familiar. During your session, your photographer will be looking for those little quirks that make your relationship special. The inside jokes, the natural way you two look at each other, your preferences and maybe even your insecurities. By the end of your session, not only will you have a better idea of what to expect on your wedding day, but you’ll hopefully also have a stronger connection with your future spouse and your photographer. Which again, makes everyone more relaxed.

Make it personal

The engagement session is the perfect time to get creative. Bring out the things that make you, you! Bring your precious puppy along for the shoot… or any family pet, really! Bring along a bottle of champagne and celebrate! Reconnect with your fiancé at a place that means so much to the two of you! Whether it’s at Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park, Colorado or a field no one else knows about, this is your chance to make it personal and fun! Again, no pressure! This is practice!

You can also use this opportunity as a trial run for your makeup and hair. And if there’s something you aren’t happy with once you see your images, you have time to speak up and change it!

Also, if you are having trouble finding the perfect outfit, your photographer can point you in the right direction. Choosing an outfit doesn’t have to be super stressful! I give my clients the chance to borrow outfits from my personal Client Closet at no charge.

Use your images pre-wedding

Save the Dates? Table décor? Guestbook? Your engagement session images can be used for all sorts of things. Plus, you’ll be able to show off how gorgeous and natural you and your fiancé are in front of a camera.

Your Colorado engagement session can be a fun, exciting experience, and most importantly, it can help alleviate some of that pre-wedding stress. So, let loose, pop that champagne and get to know your photographer a little better. Happy wedding planning!
